Wiring a Roombox – My First Attempt
I started wiring my 1950s diner roombox this week. The electric lights I installed give it a great sense of realism! I was a bit scared before I got started, since I've never worked with electrical components before, but it was actually a lot easier than I thought. All that you need to get started is a basic wiring kit and a 12 volt transformer. The first thing I did was open the kit and read the instructions. "This looks easy!" I thought. Famous last words? Actually, the kit did make it pretty easy. The wiring kit I used for this doll house shop contained strips of copper tapewire that you simply run along the walls. The instructions suggest drawing the wiring path in advance, though I found it wasn't really needed in a small roombox. Then, you connect the fixtures and the transformer. The kit made it easy, but installing lighting in the doll house shop is definitely detail-oriented work. At some points it felt like I needed a magnifying glass to make sure everything was placed just right! Starting with a small roombox is definitely the way to go if you want to get comfortable installing dollhouse lighting. And definitely read the instructions carefully – not only are they immensely helpful, but it's a smart idea anytime you're working with electricity.
Once the wiring was installed, the final step is to turn on the transformer. The moment of truth – and everything worked! I breathed a sigh of relief that I'd done everything correctly, and stepped back to marvel at the bright and shiny lights. I think they'll make a big difference in the appearance of my doll house shop.
Now that the electrifying work is done, it's time to move all of the decorations into the roombox. My favorite part of the process!
