What You Should Know About Dolls For Dolls Houses

Should you populate your finished miniature with dolls? Many collectors end up considering this question while buying miniatures to fill their house. Historically, dolls for dolls houses have left something to be desired when realism is considered. Today, though, amazingly realistic dolls can add a special 'lived in' quality to the home.

You may even find yourself daydreaming about the lives your tiny dolls live. Before you buy dolls for a house, think about who the inhabitants might be. Do you want a family with young children? An older, retired couple? Don't forget about the family pets, too. Draw inspiration from the home you've chosen to determine the type of dolls who will be inhabiting the house.

If you do decide to purchase dolls for dolls houses, keep the following tips in mind:

Consider the time period of the home. A Victorian lady will look out-of-place in your midcentury modern abode. Likewise, a little boy in jeans and a sweatshirt won't fit into the scene of a rustic log cabin. Pay particular attention to the clothes your doll should wear to look right at home amongst your miniature furnishings.

Take a look at scale. Created for the standard 1” scale, most adult male dolls are about 6 inches tall, with females measuring 5 to 5 ¾ inches in height. Both the overall height and the relative size of body parts and features should be to scale with your dolls house and its furnishings. Check the size of your doll by comparing to the size of the room and the furniture. For example, there should be at least an inch between the head and the ceiling, and it also should fit comfortably on its bed.

Aim for realism. As a collector, you've probably seen a few dolls for dolls houses that left something to be desired. Poorly painted features, stiff joints, and disproportionate bodies are just a few of the problems historically plaguing miniature dolls. Thankfully, today you can choose from a wide array of delicately crafted dolls that will look perfectly at home in any miniature setting.

Do you want to pose your dolls, or would you prefer that they stand? Some dolls for dolls houses are jointed or have limbs made of wire so that they can be posed in various positions. Others have rigid joints that cannot be posed.
